Labor shortages, especially among nurses, are not new to healthcare. But the COVID-19 pandemic’s effect on the workforce includes an unprecedented rate of burnout across all positions. Workers are leaving healthcare in droves while demand continues to increase, creating an expanding gap. A December 2021 study from Mayo Clinic Proceedings found that close to 1/3 of physicians and nurses reported a clear intention to reduce work hours, and that close to 40% of nurses and 25% of physicians intend to leave their practice altogether.
Ways to address labor shortages, burnout and other workforce challenges are front and center in healthcare in 2022. In fact, the American Hospital Association recently called the issue a “national emergency” and is calling on Congress to step in.
