Hospital at Home has been in practice for about 20 years at Johns Hopkins Medicine, who holds the trademark on the name. Other health systems have implemented various versions of hospital at home services in the years since, toward the goals of reducing costs and increasing patient satisfaction.

Acute, hospital-level care at home certainly had a moment during the height of the pandemic, when hospitals were over capacity for COVID patients. Using non-COVID patients’ own homes as hospital rooms quickly became an attractive option for many facilities, and as it turns out, patients have been in favor of it too.
