A center of excellence (COE) is a specialized program within a healthcare institution with exceptionally high concentrations of expertise and related resources centered on particular medical areas and delivered in a comprehensive, interdisciplinary fashion.
Hospitals may choose to become a COE to attract a certain segment of healthcare patients, or to serve a specialized need in a particular region. It requires focusing resources on a narrow discipline, which can result in drawing patients from a larger geographic area but also prohibit a hospital or health system from considering service expansion in other disciplines.
