MEET THE PIONEERS REGION – TRENDS ACHIEVE 2.0 STATUS
Normally these are the courts that bring in the fresh-faced ball handlers, but this year’s Pioneers region is dominated by trends we’ve seen before – only bigger and stronger. Healthcare innovation has not stagnated in the least, but this year’s teams – with just a few exceptions – seem to be more organized along established channels and building upward rather than outward.
Not surprising, “Powered by AI” continues as a de facto battle cry for many of this region’s trends, with AI having long ago ceased being a single team in this tournament. The new story is how teams are incorporating AI for strategic offense. AI is not the only story, of course, with regional excitement coming from a modern reboot of old-timey house calls, a day of ROI reckoning for healthcare tech, and consumers clamping down harder on the direct-to-consumer bone in their mouths.

THE EIGHT TRENDS AND THE FIRST FOUR MATCHUPS
Leading the tech-centric corner of the bracket this year is The Health Tech ROI Reckoning (1): a loud industry signal that it’s time to account for years of speculative investing in healthcare technology. Startups that fail to prove ROI face funding pressure, longer sales cycles, and consolidation, while companies showing real impact gain the advantage. This trend is expected to sail past The End of “Virtual as Add-On” (8) as virtual care evolves from a pandemic-era add-on to permanent infrastructure, with health systems embedding digital-first workflows across care delivery.
With teams in both the Pioneer and Providers regions, home-based care could go far in the 2026 March Healthcare Classic. Home-Based Care Becomes Scalable (4) punched its tournament ticket based on surging demand, regulatory backing, and tech-enabled solutions that are helping home-based care models to scale rapidly. This team-to-watch will face tournament rookie Next-Gen Chronic Care (5), which promises to leverage AI to tackle hairy conditions like diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and COPD. Aging populations and rising payor pressure are making chronic care innovation an industry priority in 2026.
Fueled by FDA decisions in early 2026 and strategic partnerships between startups and big pharma to scale manufacturing and commercialization, Cell & Gene Therapy Boom (3) reflects market growth expected to reach $183 billion by 2034. We’ve seen this team play before with similar predictions from the pundits, so it will be interesting to see if this team makes it out of the first round. The challenge in this contest comes from Consumers Take Health Optimization Direct (6), another well-hyped, not-so-new but super savvy team that speaks to patients taking more control of their health and wellness strategies outside traditional medical settings – now even including direct-to-consumer lab tests and radiologic screenings.
Generative AI is speeding drug discovery and clinical trial design, helping startups bring therapies to market faster and more efficiently. With investors and pharma partners flocking to this space, AI Powers Drug Discovery (2) will try to assert its dominance over Funding Falls Short for FemTech (7) – a head-scratching team making its debut tournament appearance thanks to the bewildering disconnect between unmet clinical need for women’s health and systemic underinvestment in fertility, menopause, chronic disease, and diagnostics.
Meet the trends in the Purchasers & Plans, Providers and Policy regions.
