Shaheed I. Koury, MD, MBA, FACEP
Chief Clinical Officer
Shaheed Koury is an accomplished Senior Physician Executive and Board Member with more than 25 years of success across the healthcare, technology, medical, and legal sectors. Leveraging extensive experience working with both the operations and clinical sides of medicine while bridging the relationship between hospital administration and physicians, he is a valuable asset for medical businesses working on operational improvements or companies aiming for growth through M&A activity or spinoffs. His broad areas of expertise include healthcare IT, malpractice, risk management, healthcare management, electronic health records, M&A, clinical services, and strategic planning.
Throughout his executive career, Dr. Koury has held leadership positions at organizations including Adena Health System, Quorum Health and Community Health Systems. He is currently the Chief Clinical Officer for Adena Health where he leads all Clinical Operations for the 800M health system. Prior to this he served as the Chief Medical Officer & President for Clinical Operations for the $2.5 billion privately held hospital company Quorum Health from 2016 to 2022. He led the Clinical Services Department which included medical affairs, nursing, case management, quality, safety and all ancillary services. Dr. Koury also served as an officer of the company. He shifted operations to make it a physician led company, created a leadership academy and physician advisory council, and implemented strategic collaborative initiatives to improve the electronic health records process to improve physician satisfaction. As VP for Quality & Clinical Transformation with Community Health Systems from 2013 to 2016, he was promoted from a Medical Advisor role to help lead the $20 billion publicly-traded hospital company and guided it to become one of the safest hospital networks in the nation by implementing safety and high reliability tools for all of the medical staff at over 200 hospitals. He also led the development of multiple Clinically Integrated Networks (CINs) in the largest markets to help the for-profit company move to deliver value-based care. Here he oversaw a 68% reduction in Serious Safety Events over the first two years resulting in significant savings, while implementing collaborative staffing programs for annual cost savings of $15 million accompanied by improvements in quality metrics. He previously spent 10 years as an award-winning Emergency Physician with Emergency Medicine of Indiana. He was also an Executive Advisor to venture development group Genesis Ventures, with a focus on industries that utilize software technology as a core business model including real estate, healthcare, commercial lending, social networking, and inbound marketing.
Shaheed holds an MBA in Health Care Management from Indiana Wesleyan University and an MD from the University of Kentucky, after earlier graduating from UK with a BA in Chemistry. He completed his Residency in Emergency Medicine at The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. As a seasoned Board Member, he has held board and advisory positions with Synchronous Health, CareHarmony, Physician’s Weekly, Professional Medical Billing and Emergency Medicine of Indiana. He was recognized as Emergency Physician of the Year at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, Indiana, has been published in numerous medical journals, and has presented at a number of medical forums and conferences nationally.
